Welcome To The Neighborhood
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13–14
Welcome to the neighborhood!
Have you ever considered taking a few minutes to think about what your neighborhood really looks like? The people you see in it. The people you talk to. The people you encage with. And now think about the many opportunities given to you by God to bring light into someone’s darkness. Hope into someone’s hurt. A smile into someone’s sorrow. And a hug for someone's hurt. All we have to do is look up and look around and it’s there right in front of our eyes!
Keep looking and you’ll find someone. The atheist. The cultist. The mocker. The scoffer. The intellectual. The ignorant. These are people that need Jesus. These are the people that we all have been called to reach. They are our mission field. What does your mission field look like? Yes, the faces are different, but the state of their soul before God is not!
The primary mission field for us is not far away. It’s not across the border, but across the aisle, across the counter, across the street or across the table! Our mission field is in the daily routine of our lives. Never forget that God didn’t save us to be passive spectators. He saved us and sends us in our neighborhood with His love. Each of us are called to play a part in God’s mission as His light in a darkened neighborhood!
Think about this, we don’t just go to the store, to the doctor’s office, to church, to the restaurant. You see, when we think missionally it changes our perspective. This reminds us that God sends us to each of these places that could very well turn daily appointments into divine appointments!
The apostle Paul reminds us of a powerful truth, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:13–14).” What an incredible picture! God is doing the work of transferring people from the clutches of Satan into the embrace of the Savior!
God instructs us in the Book of Colossians to think of our lives three ways: pray, live, and talk.
“Continue steadfastly in prayer being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time pray also for us that God may open to us a door for the word to declare the mystery of Christ on account of which I am in prison that I may make it clear which is how I ought to speak. Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person (Colossians 4:2-6).”
So let’s think about 3 powerful thoughts from these verses: we pray so we are always dependent on God, we live for nothing but truth, and talk to people all around us!
God has strategically placed each of us in our neighborhood as radically redeemed missionaries. Why? Because He wants His kingdom to overcome Satan’s kingdom as we reveal His love in our neighborhood one person at a time. What a mission!
God bless you,
Pastor Dave
