The Greatest Comeback Ever
Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher). Jesus said to her…go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her. John 20:16-18
What a beautiful resurrection Sunday we experienced! It’s reported that about 50% of Americans attended some kind of worship service. That’s encouraging!
As I was attending the sunrise service and listening to Pastor Jeremiah preach, this thought stuck me – the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most amazing comeback story in the history of the world!
Every demon with satanic hate was against the resurrection. The power of the world’s most evil empire at the time, Rome, was against the resurrection. The religious rattlesnakes of Judaism were against the resurrection. And the powerful emotion of doubt in the hearts of the disciples was also against the resurrection. Talk about defeating the unthinkable odds against Jesus’s resurrection!
In the above verses, what a powerful moment! Mary Magdalene thought Jesus was dead. She had initially come to prepare His body for burial (Jewish burials involved multiple steps beyond laying a body in a tomb). But to her surprise, she came face to face with the resurrected Lord. In an instant, her mourning turns to dancing and her weeping into joy. Mary was suddenly overjoyed, filled with unexplainable hope that turned her uncertain world completely around. Jesus’ resurrection proved that death did not have the last say, and that no matter what presses us down or holds us captive, we can break loose for a comeback.
Because of the power of the resurrection, every believer has a comeback story! We have comeback from the deadness and darkness of sin’s grip on us and we have comeback from a life with no purpose. Also, every believer has some kind of comeback story whether it concerns hate, doubt, anger, fear, failure, drugs, alcohol, sex addiction, or something else!
Let me share with you a motto that I have held on to in my life over the years…when you suffer a setback, don’t take a step back, get ready for a comeback! Claim that for your life too! Hum…I think a see another t-shirt coming!
Just as every foul demon was against Jesus’ comeback, the same goes for us! Just as religious powers were against Jesus’ comeback, the same goes for us! Just as many emotions were against Jesus’ comeback, the same goes for us! Just as certain family and friends were doubting Jesus’ comeback, so it goes for us too!
The disciple’s comeback story was around their heart-filled doubt. Paul’s comeback story was around his hate-filled persecution. So what’s your comeback story around?
Paul said it perfectly concerning our comeback, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory (comeback) through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:55-57).”
You see, Christ’s comeback is our comeback, and His power is our power! So share your comeback story with someone this week!
God bless you,
Pastor Dave
