Magnificent Milestone
“Be ware that you do not forget the Lord your God…”
Deuteronomy 8:11
Here we are celebrating 247 years as a nation. All Americans should pause to ponder the magnificent milestone concerning the years of God’s blessings.
Wouldn’t you agree, that the most amazing band of men produced the most inspiring document? It is a document that expresses the nation's revolutionary reliance on the Redeemer when they penned these words…
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Let’s not forget that our founding Fathers pledged their allegiance to this truly revolutionary concept of divine rights that, if followed, would secure liberty for the coming generations of Americans.
These men were unleashing a comprehensive truth which would turn their lives upside down. For the first time in the history of nations, their theological appeal to God was to make equality not based on merit or performance, but on the image of God that’s found in every single person. It was this courageous commitment that created a culture of life in America while rejecting the culture of death that could be found in nation after nation. America is truly different than every other nation with it’s godly beginnings.
Historian David Marcus reminds us of America’s uniqueness among the nations of history, “Ours is not a nation that bends to the arc of history. Ours is a nation that bends the arc of history.” We truly do live in the most free country that the world has ever known.
Why was our nation birthed in blessings? How is it that America has the prosperity like no other nation? Simple, America was founded on the Bible! Now before anyone has a heart attack because of that statement, let’s remember what I said on Sunday. The University of Houston political science professors Donald Lutz and Charles Hyneman in 1983 published a monumental study that took them 10 years to complete. They surveyed over 15,000 documents written by our Founding Fathers between 1760-1805 (45 years) and the Bible was, the most cited source, comprising 34% of all quotations. In fact, the Bible was quoted four times more than any other source.
The four mentions of God in the Declaration of Independence proves that our Founding Fathers greatly depended on God to establish godly government with godly laws for the people.
On this Fourth of July, we celebrate again the amazing declaration of divine dignity found in everyone, and the unbelievable worth of every human being. America is great not because of its military, money or might, America is great because of God! Never forget that God is America’s national treasure!
In our 21st century, let’s recapture the wise words of Thomas Jefferson that reflected the overwhelming mindset of the 18th century, when he said, “God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.”
