The Perfect Reason
“We love Him because He first loved us.”
1 John 4:19
This verse gives the perfect reason why we worship God. Think about it, He acted first and then we respond to His act of grace. And that’s worship! Worship is our proper response to God’s love.
The Bible tells us Jesus said to the woman at the well of Samaria that the Father is seeking people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. So it’s the proper response to God that comes from the core of our being.
We are coming into an important season of worship! I want to encourage all of us to seriously dedicate this month to the sacred worship of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We want to declare that God is supremely worthy of our worship. We must, if we’re to worship God, place Him above hobbies, entertainment, education, friends, spouses, and even children. For Jesus said, “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. He who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”
So worship isn’t just a once-a-week activity, it’s not just a feeling that we should conjure up on Sunday. It is a lifestyle of adoration where we continually declare that God is above everything else in our lives.
Does it ever amaze you that we Christians talk so much about being transformed by our relationship with Jesus, but many times fail to show that we’ve been transformed? George Smith said, “There are five Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and fifth, the Christian. And most people will never read the first four.” I believe that distinctive worship helps us to be distinguished worshippers!
A.W. Tozer was right when he said, “Worship is the missing jewel of the evangelical church.” As our country becomes more and more secular, our churches are losing the whole reason that we gather together as Christians. Worship is not entertainment, but it’s wonderment. Worship is not self-seeking, but it’s Spirit seeking.
King David is the writer of Psalm 95 and I love how he put’s worship into perfect perspective for us with the most impressive descriptions of God.
Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
For the Lord is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
In verse one, God is the Rock of our salvation. In verse three, God is the great King above all. In verse four, God is the Creator of earth. In verse six, worship get personal as King David says God is our Maker. This is why He’s of the greatest worth!
I close with this thought. What we know and say about God can never be said about George Washington, Napoleon, Mozart or Elvis. No wonder God said to us, “I am the Lord your God, and you will have no other god besides Me.” There’s not five gods floating around out there, and take your pick. There’s only one God who is of supreme worth!
God bless you,
Pastor Dave
