The Preserving Power
In the days of the great King Hezekiah, Israel was under a serious threat by the evil intent of the Assyrian King. He calculated a plan to rid the world of Israel for good. And Hezekiah did what was only natural – he prayed!
The Bible tells us, “He went up to the house of the Lord and spread it (the letter he received) out before the Lord. Then he prayed, ‘O Lord, the God of Israel, who is enthroned above the cherubim. You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Now, O Lord our God, I pray, deliver us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O Lord, are God’” (2 Kings 19:14, 15, 19).
And history tells us that Israel prevailed by the power of God over the power of evil!
Fast forward in history to June 6, 1944 and another leader who knew that defeat was sure if God didn’t intervene on behalf of America.
I’m speaking about President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He knew that without prayer backing the thousands of soldiers on D-Day that WWII would be lost!
It’s recorded that the president personally wrote a prayer for America. And just as king Hezekiah’s prayer changed the course of evil for a nation, Roosevelt’s prayer did the same. I’d like to share a portion of the 544 words he prayed over the crackling radio waves that an estimated 100 million people heard worldwide.
"Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Men's souls will be shaken with the violence of war. Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom. I ask that our people devote themselves into a continuance of prayer...And, O Lord, give us faith. Give us faith in Thee.”
And later that day, our nations learned that heroic young men crawled from the sea and fell from the sky in an effort to stop the advancement of Hitler's evil over Europe.
Folks, our nation is facing an avalanche of evil that is now taking our nation captive. This evil is far more powerful than a king or dictator from a far away land. This evil is in the form of “principalities”, “powers”, “rulers of darkness of this age”, and “spiritual host of wickedness in the heavenly realm” (Ephesians 6:12). Never before has America been flooded with this kind of evil that has now taken captive at least 3 generations of Americans. That’s three generations, that at this moment, has lost preserving biblical morality and prevailing faith in God.
With every crisis that our country has encountered over the last 250 years, Americans have always overcame by their great faith in God. It’s scary now because for the first time, the evil that grips our modern secular society is advancing quickly across every age group and virtually every religious group.
Is it too late for another Hezekiah or Roosevelt to pray again? How much more evil can this country encounter and still endure?
Keep in mind this fact – prayer has always been the preserving power over the evil that has tried to penetrate our country throughout its history!
God bless America as we stand together!
