Choosing Well
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Don’t let the Devil use your sin to seduce you into the false “I don’t have a choice” trap that will only mire you deeper in the muck of even more sin. You always have a choice! For believers, it really comes down to choosing the path God has for you or choosing the path that our flesh has for us!
James tells us that the wisdom to choose well is always available to us! He said, “If any one lacks wisdom, ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)”
You can choose what you do when laziness, tardiness, or incompetence costs you the job. You don’t have to get angry, violent, or slander the company on the way out the door.
You can choose what you do when your lust-as-love moment leaves you or your girlfriend is pregnant and on the verge of being exposed and having your life forever altered. You don’t have to cover up your indiscretion with an abortion or compound your irresponsibility by walking away.
You can choose what you do when your reckless misspending makes foreclosure, eviction, or repossession seem imminent. You don’t have to steal, commit fraud, traffic drugs, or sell yourself.
You can choose what you do when your addiction, anger or apathy leaves your spouse neglected and your marriage on the brink of divorce. You don’t have to shift the blame, drown your sorrows or harden your heart and give up on love.
As my grandfather often told me, “There ain’t but two things in this world you gotta do, boy. Die, and live ‘til you die! Everything else is somethin’ you choose.”
And he wasn’t wrong!
